In this second instalment of our “Features to look for in an LMS” blog series, we will discuss why online course creation and assignment are key features to look for in a Learning Management System (LMS). We will explore how the addition of organizational structure and incorporating assignment distribution and tracking of your online training program, can boost effectiveness and your ROI. We will also touch on how ongoing course development can contribute to delivering long-term and valuable employee engagement.

1. Online Course Creation and Organizational Structure

If you have decided to strengthen your organization’s training program by adding an LMS to your toolkit. Your task moving forward is determining how the organizational structure, or framework, of your course, will be designed to best suit your current and ongoing training needs. Optimizing the operation of your LMS will require the inclusion of several factors, including course content and the organization of employee activities (skills development and assessments). These two categories mandate a need for solid framework and ease of use, including but not limited to these areas:

  • Course Cataloging System (seamless and efficient navigation)
  • Company Standards (procedures, guidelines, policies etc.)
  • Integrated Data and Documentation (easy access to course content and reports)
  • Data Management and Maintenance (updating, archiving purging)

2. Online Course Assignment

This is an element of your LMS (Learning Management System) technology that could make or break your online training program’s success. During the online course assignment process, you will want to communicate and specify your needs as to how your new LMS platform will curate and assign particular tasks, and then efficiently share this information with your organization’s management team.

This feature is vital. It should offer, but is not limited to:

  • Mass Assignments (large or corporate groups, roles)
  • Inherited Assignments (automatic assignment for specific groups, roles)
  • Delivery (Quizzes, Virtual Classroom, Zoom, etc.)
  • Email or Text Notifications (new assignments, task status, overdue assignments)

3. Course Development

As your business grows and your team expands, you will undoubtedly encounter many changes along the way. With that in mind, advancement and expansion are critical factors to consider when choosing an LMS. Your LMS should be able to accommodate your developing structures with the evolutional ability to grow. Implementing an employee training course that fulfills your current training needs is a worthwhile goal, but stopping there can limit your capacity for employee development down the road. Essentially, your eLearning platform should be capable of taking you into the future, tracking your needs and updating as required.
