Learn the Steve Jobs Method of Training Employees Online

Steve Jobs was a master of leading presentations.

He would confidently engage a room full of hundreds of people, while being broadcast to millions of people online.

So how did he do it so well? You can borrow some of his techniques when designing your own training materials.

Training employees online allows you to focus right in on individual learners, but you still have to keep their attention.

Use Thoughtful Design

online training“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
– Steve Jobs

Apple’s iconic products are as famous for their design as they are for their functionality, and this philosophy shows in his presentations. There is no wasted space on a slide, or on-screen.

Don’t just slap some text and visuals together and assume it will work. Put some thought into the learner’s experience and what they will see.

Keep it Simple

“Simple Can be Harder Than Complex”
– Steve Jobs

This is a part of the last point. The design and packaging of an iPhone is simple, slick and elegant. This is Apple’s brand and this design philosophy shows up everywhere—especially on Jobs’ slides.

He used a visual simplicity on screen to keep things looking lean, while he used to voice to tell the story or convey information.

But simple is not always simple. Simple is an art form. Try your best to balance a de-cluttered look, while still getting the information to your audience. You will get better at it each time.

Take Advantage of the Online Environment

“What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with, and it’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.”

– Steve Jobs

The most important thing is to take full advantage of the potential this technology creates.

You can do more in an online environment, both in the information you present and how you present it. Don’t be afraid to do more interesting things with your visuals and multimedia.

Also, designing each session can be done relatively quickly. So, if you receive feedback on the last lesson, you can incorporate it into your next lesson or module.

Again, the more you do this, the better you will become. Don’t expect to give Jobs-level online training sessions your first time. Continue to improve and keep using thoughtful design and you will soon be very proud of your work.
